The Right Care For Your Newly Pierced Ears

Got your ears pierced recently but don’t know how to care for them? Or, are you having a hard time keeping them clean, painless and infection-free? Well, you’re not alone. The ear piercing takes only few seconds but the kind of care and attention it needs for healing can freak you out.

For those who don’t know, your newly pierced ears needs about 6-8 weeks of healing time. And, if you don’t pay proper attention to new piercings, there are chances that your healing process may extend and become painful & infectious. Here are a few things you can do to prevent this situation:

Leave the earrings on

Never remove earrings from new piercings as this can result in holes to close. Keeping them on will not only speed up the healing process but will also prevent and treat infection which might have been caused because of absence of earrings.

Get a hypoallergenic earring or stud

Are you thinking of replacing the starter earrings? Though, it’s best you don’t remove the starter earrings to promote healing, but if you wish to do so, replace them with earrings made out of gold or any hypoallergenic stud. (Of course all our earrings are perfect for this situation). Please note that inserting an earring made out of nickel or any other cheaper metal can lead to an allergic reaction resulting in a lot of pain and soreness.

Important tip: Insert the new earring as soon as you take out the previous so that hole doesn’t close.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

Always make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap before handling or touching your new piercings or earrings. This is because touching the newly pierced ears with unclean hands can expose them to potentially harmful germs and bacteria.

Rotate! Rotate! Rotate!

Well, rotating your earrings several times a day for first few days and weeks after getting your ears pierced is the key to rev up the healing process. Moreover, your ears will not heal tightly closed around earrings if you do so. Perhaps, it’s the best way to achieve the rightly pierced ear holes.

Treat it with warm salt water

In case you’re finding it difficult to rotate your stud/earring or it is causing pain, then take warm salt water, soak a cotton ball & hold it onto your holes for few minutes. This will loosen and remove any crust that may have formed around new piercings.

A bit of hydrogen peroxide

Don’t forget to apply cotton swab dipped in hydrogen peroxide on both sides of earlobes twice every day. Stick to the process until your holes are completely healed. Not only will this promote healing but will also cut down any risk of infection.

Sleep on your back

Never sleep on your side as doing so will increase the chances of your earrings getting stuck in sheets and blankets—something that can lead to pain & inflammation.

Go for over-the-counter medicines

You can also opt for over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines for the initial few days of piercings as this will lessen swelling or any other discomfort you may have.
